Vintage Windows, Patience, and a Little Trial & Error

If you’ve ever worked with vintage materials, you already know one thing for certain — nothing is ever quite as simple as it looks.

When we started building my farmhouse greenhouse, the frame went up surprisingly quickly. That was the easy part. With a good plan, a pile of lumber, and my very talented “project manager” (also known as Dad), the structure itself came together beautifully. Standing back and seeing the bones of the greenhouse for the first time was such an exciting moment. Suddenly the vision felt real.

But then came the windows.

The entire personality of this greenhouse comes from the old farmhouse windows we found. They’re full of charm — weathered wood, wavy glass, and that unmistakable vintage character you just can’t replicate with new materials.

They are also… not exactly the same size.

That’s where the real work began.

Each window has its own personality. Some are slightly wider, some perfectly square, and others not quite. Instead of simply installing identical panels, every single opening has required measuring, adjusting, trimming, without breaking the glass.

Let’s just say this part of the project has definitely tested my dad’s patience.

More than once we’ve held a window up to the frame thinking, “This should fit perfectly,” only to realize it was off by just enough to require a bit of creative problem solving.

But honestly, that’s part of the charm of a project like this.

And despite the occasional head scratching and a few “let’s step back and rethink this” moments, it’s starting to come together beautifully.

Standing inside the structure now, you can really start to imagine what it will become. Sunlight pouring through old glass, plants tucked into every corner, and a quiet place to sit with a cup of tea and plan the garden.

We’re not finished yet. The windows still need to be secured, and the inside will eventually get a fresh coat of paint. But seeing the greenhouse take shape piece by piece has been incredibly rewarding.

This little garden retreat is already starting to feel special.

And the best part? It was built with a little creativity, a lot of patience, and a dad who somehow manages to make my ideas actually work.

Stay tuned… more greenhouse updates to come.
